Abstract (EN)

In this research on the Ottoman Mediterranean policy in the Selim II period (1566-1574), the changes in the world and the Ottoman Empire in that period were also discussed; an attempt has been made to form a general point of view about this period. While this subject is being handled, the main sources of the study are the mühimme consent books (including 7 and 26 numbers) kept to the Ottoman period, the contemporary chronicles written at that time (Kâtip Çelebi, etc.) and the research works written today. The main questions addressed doing research on this subject were the following: How was the Mediterranean policy of the empire handled during the Selim II period and what were the results of this policy? How was this Mediterranean policy affected by predecessors of Selim II and the conditions of that period, by the people who directed the politics of the period and the actors who are the implementers of it (sailors/sea pirates)? What kind of legacy did the Mediterranean policy of the Selim II period leave to his successors? While these basic questions are being discussed, it is assumed that the historical flow of the Ottoman military history and the political events of the period in general are discussed in the studies carried out the date, an attempt was made to bring a collective perspective to the maritime politics of the Selim period; the mentality of the ruler and statesmen and other important figures who influenced the politics of the period was also tried to be understood. For this purpose, progress has been made by following the scientific method in the researches. As a result, it has been tried to reveal what kind of maritime policy the Ottoman Empire, which is assumed to be a maritime empire, as some historians put it, followed in this period and how much it dominated the seas.
