Abstract (EN)

The balance of the slope, having plane type of failure, depends on much factor such as rock mass properties dip and dip directions of discontinuity, slope angle, friction angle of discontinuity, rock type, groundwater conditions, dynamic loading and the normal stress terms. The stability of the slope, having plane type of failure, can be evaluated by conventional and numerical approaches. In stratified sedimentary rock formations plane type of rock failure is very observed. Planar failure in two different slopes in Gürpınar (Van) and Çukurca (Hakkari) regions, which are composed of sedimentary rocks, were investigated in this study. In this study, planar failure in units consisting of calcarenite and shale were evaluated by laboratory tests and Barton criterion that depend on field tests. Non-linear curves obtained by shear test and Barton empirical criterion were compared and data related to planar shift were interpreted on the plane failures in the discontinuities. In the deterministic analysis, it was found that the rock having higher discontinuity surface strength and uniaxial compressive strength had lower shear strength contrary to expectations. As a result, it was found that the main mechanism controlling the shear strength is the strength and surface discontinuity roughness of the rocks forming the rock rather than the strength of the rock material.
