The effect of story completion activity on students' writing skills in teaching Turkish as a second language

The purpose of this study; to measure the effect of story completion activities on writing skills of students learning Turkish as second language. The study group of the research consists of 14 students of Arab origin, who learn Turkish as a second language, selected from a secondary school in Yüreğir district of Adana province. Action research method was applied in the study. First of all, a preliminary application was made to the students and their demographic information was analyzed. Students were asked to write a composition on the given topic and the compositions were evaluated with a rubric. In the next stage, students were given information about story completion activities and were asked to complete a story completion activity every week for 5 weeks. Individual feedback was given to students after each activity. At the end of the application, the students had the composition written again as a final application and it was evaluated with a rubric. The students' opinions about the activities were taken with the final interview form. As a result of the research, an average of 56% difference was observed between the students' first application and second application scores. While it was determined that the students showed significant progress in the areas of page layout, title, plan and operation, and language and expression, sufficient results were not obtained in the field of spelling and punctuation.
