Determining local people's awareness of the relationship between climate change and urban green space: a case study of Ergene district, Tekirdağ province

Climate change is an important environmental problem that creates effects on different scales, from local to global scale. Green areas are an important tool in reducing risks, adaptation and combating climate change. In the study, the hypothesis was developed that "Green spaces play an active role in mitigation, adaptation and improvement efforts in the climate change process, and in this process, it is necessary and important to determine the awareness of users about the relationship between green spaces and climate change." In the context of the relevant hypothesis, "What is the impact of green areas on the climate change process?" and "What are the perceptions and awareness of users in the context of climate change and green space relations in Ergene District?" Answers to these questions were sought. The general purpose of the study is to determine the awareness and perception levels of local people living in the neighborhoods of Tekirdağ Ergene District on the basis of the climate change-green area relationship. In this context, Ergene District urban area analysis and Ergene District climate change impact-vulnerability analyzes were made, and then a survey was conducted on 375 people on the basis of the climate change-urban green area relationship. The survey revealed the participants' awareness levels of climate change and the relationship between climate change and green areas. The data obtained from the surveys were subjected to descriptive analyzes such as percentage distribution and frequency, as well as statistical evaluations such as factor analysis and chi-square. As a result of the study, the perception and awareness of local people in the process of climate change impact-vulnerability and climate change-urban green area relationship in Ergene District of Tekirdağ Province were determined and various suggestions were developed.
