Abstract (EN)

The reasons for the Crusades and how the early Crusades are portrayed in Western sources constitute the main thrust of this study. The first section of the study examines the causes of the Crusades, meticulously addressing the topic in all its aspects. In particular, the study focuses on religious, political, and economic factors, as well as the attitudes of Muslims toward Christians at the time and whether the general state of the Islamic world at the time of the Crusades influenced these campaigns. These reasons are explored to the extent possible. The second section examines the general course of the First Crusade, summarizing the progress and actions of the Christian armies following the call for Crusades, based on the chronicles of Western historians. The focus is on the places the Crusaders captured after entering Anatolia, particularly Nicaea, and their significance, thus shedding light on how Antioch and Jerusalem were captured. The Crusader movements that followed the First Crusades are explained, and the Crusader states established in the East following these campaigns are identified. The third section of the study examines the causes of the Second Crusade, with particular attention paid to explaining the impact of the recapture of the city of Urfa from the Crusaders by the Zengid Dynasty on this campaign. The general course and outcomes of the Second Crusade, along with the recapture of Jerusalem by Saladin and its impact on the Third Crusade, are explored. The fourth and final section evaluates the Third Crusade, focusing on the conflict between King Richard of England and Saladin, who were in conflict throughout this campaign. The first three Crusades span a period of approximately one hundred years, from 1095 to 1192. Therefore, the study has attempted to shed as much light as possible on this period from a general perspective, while also providing detailed explanations of some important events. In discussing the First Crusades, Western sources were used as the basis for the study's purpose.
