Abstract (EN)

This research is a pre-test post-test controlled group randomized controlled intervention study conducted to determine the effect of breathing exercises applied to patients undergoing coronary angiography on anxiety. The population of the study consisted of patients who would undergo coronary angiography at the Training and Research Hospital in İstanbul. The sample group included 76 patients who met the inclusion criteria for the study, with 38 in the intervention group and 38 in the control group. Data were collected using a personal information form and the Beck Anxiety Scale. In the experimental group, the Beck Anxiety Scale was administered to patients before the coronary angiography procedure, and they received training and application of breathing exercises. After the coronary angiography procedure, the Beck Anxiety Scale was administered again. For the control group, the Beck Anxiety Scale was applied before and after the procedure. The 'Dependent Group T-Test' was used for comparing intra-group scores in the analysis of data obtained from the scales used in the study, and the 'Independent Group T-Test' was used for comparing inter-group scores. The pre-procedure scores for patients in the intervention and control groups were31,92±9,60 and 28,92±10,6, respectively. A statistically significant difference was found between the scores they obtained from the Beck Anxiety Inventory (z:-2.11 - p: .034). According to this result, the post-application mean scores of the Beck Anxiety Inventory for patients undergoing angiography in the intervention group are lower than the mean viii scores of the Beck Anxiety Scale for patients in the control group. In conclusion, anxiety is high in patients undergoing coronary angiography for the first time, pre-procedure breathing exercises reduce anxiety, and there is a significant difference compared to the control group. In line with these results, it is recommended to apply pre-procedure breathing exercises to patients undergoing angiography. Keywords: Coronary Angiography, Breathing Exercises, Anxiety
