ABSTRACT THE EVALUATION OF UNIT JOURNALS, WHICH ARE USED AS SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS IN THE FOURTH AND FIFTH OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, ACCORDING TO THE OPINIONS OF TEACHERS IN TERMS OF EDUCATION Ümit ERDO?AN Anadolu University Graduate School of Educational Sciences Department of Educational Sciences Curriculum and Instruction Program January 2004 Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Mustafa SA?LAM Beside the course books, which are normally used during five years without being changed, the use of unit journals, which provide a largely unit content, has increased recently. At elemantry schools classroom teachers used unit journals as helping book for a variety of reasons. At the beginnig of these reasons unit journals present more current knowledge and include more studies than course books. Unit journals have been used in schools for a variety of reasons. Yet, it has been realized that there have not been enough number of studies on unit journals, which are increasingly used in the first cycle of elementary schools. Most of the studies regarding unit journals done are the studies which were aimed to suggest the directors, teachers and parents opinions about the choice and use of journals. So the lack of studies on unit journals with regards to education has been realized. Therefore, whether the unit terms of education should be determined. The study was conducted with the data collected from 244 classroom teachers who teach the fourth adn the fifth calssroom in 45 elementary schools in Eskişehir in the school year of 2001-2002. The data of this study were collected through a questionnaire VIdesigned for grade teachers. With the questionnaire consisting of 45 articles, the classroom teachers, opinions on unit journals which are used as supplementary materials regarding education were determined. With the data, the opinions of classroom teachers on unit journals, educational quality were identified. The analysis of the data was carried out by the SPSS computer programme, and of statistical techniques, the figures and percentage were used. As a result of this study, it has been understood that classroom teachers, who teach in the first cycle of elementary schools, find the unit journals mostly sufficient. vn
