iiiABSTRACTINVESTIGATION THE IDEAS OF 5th GRADE STUDENTS REGARDINGTHEIR FRIENDS IN ACCORDANCE TO SOCIOMETRIC STATUS ANDACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTVesile ORALMA Thesis, Department of Primary SchoolSupervisor: Asist.Prof.Dr. Filiz YURTALApril, 2007, 79 pagesThe purpose of this study is to investigate the ideas of 5th grade students regardingfriends and friendship in accordance to sociometric status and academic achievement.This study was conducted among 528 students attending 5th grades from 6 differentprimary schools with two low, two middle, and two high socio-economic levels. Study datawere obtained using Sociometric Test, Cohort Belief Scale and Interview Form.As consequences of this study, it was determined that the ideas of students on theirfriends have no correlation with sociometric status and academic achievement. No differencewas found between most and less chosen friends in accordance to sociometric status. Inanother hand, the students were referring good proporties such as; being intelligent, someoneliked, successfull, cheerfull, having abilities for theirselves. No differences were foundbetween successfull and unsuccessfull students on bad and good thoughts towards theirfriends. However, it was determined that successfull students can make friends easly and theirfriendship relations are better relatively. Whereas they refer themselves as being reliable,successfull, intelligent, cherfull, liked more and carrying other good proportiesKeywords: Friendship Relationship, Sociometric Status, Academic Achievement,Cohort Relations.
