Evaluation of the "composition, structure, style and kind" in music unit of primary school music teaching program and their practices

ABSTRACT Evaluation of the ?Composition, Structure, Style and Kind? in Music Unit of Primary School Music Teaching Program and Their Practices Alaattin CANBAY Fine Arts Education Department, Music Teacher Training Department Prof. Dr. Ali UÇAN May 2007 In this study we aim to evaluate Composition, Structure, Style and Kind in Music Unit of Primary School 7th year and the teaching plans prepared for this unit, and their practices. In this study a pattern based on descriptive method was used. In determining the schools for sampling, socio-cultural and economic conditions were taken into account. The research was carried out in the second half of the 2005-2006 education and teaching year on the sample schools comprised of primary schools of the Ministry of Education chosen from Çankaya, Mamak and Altındağ quarters in Ankara province. The scheme of Primary Schools Music Teaching Program, ?Composition, Structure, Style and Kind in Music? unit were studied and we tried to determine the quality of extent of planning and practicing by observing through a survey that lasted three months. In this context, opinions of the teachers as to the structure, planning and practice of the unit and the unit itself were first evaluated individually and then were evaluated in terms of the correlation between them. As the data collection tools, an enquiry form was formed to find out the opinions of the teachers as to the unit, viii viii and a survey form was formed to describe planning and practice, and a structured interview form was made to find out the ideas as to the unit and the teaching program that included the unit content analysis in evaluation of the qualitative data, frequency (f), percent (%), arithmetic mean ( ? ) in quantitative data, and two factor Anova and t test analysis techniques for mixed measuring were utilized. For statistical significance, .05 significance level was chosen. As a result of the study it has been found out that the unit program are not comprehended and interpreted properly by the teachers, and that not enough attention was given at the preparation stage of the unit and the lessons and thus the practice became insufficient, and that the period chosen for the practice of the unit program should be reconsidered. In view of these findings, it is advisable that the unit program and the teaching program covering it should be reconsidered and that the curriculum of the music teacher training schools should be modified accordingly, and that pre-and inservice education activities aiming music teachers and the number of lesson hours that cause problems in practicing the unit should be increased.
