Primary school teachers' views on school effectiveness: Case of Adıyaman province

This study aims to assess perceptions of teachers who work in state and private primary schools Adıyaman city centre on effectiveness of administrators, teachers, students, school environment and parents which are all variables of school effectiveness.In this descriptive study, scanning model was used. To achieve this end, opinions of the participants were gathered by using likert-type questionnaires. The universe of this study is composed of 1750 teachers who work in 47 state and 2 private primary schools in Adıyaman Province during 2009?2010 educational year. The sampling of the study is composed of 246 teachers.The data collection tool used in the study consists of two main parts. In the first part, there are questions to assess some demographic information regarding primary school teachers composing the sampling. In the second part, there are 67 questions in total aiming to assess the teachers? perceptions on their schools? effectiveness.The theoretical structure, constituted after a comprehensive search of literature, is tried to be explained on the basis of theory and current situation is tried to be described. The data collected by the questionnaires was analyzed by frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation by SPSS (Statistical Program for Social Sciences).Results of the analyses have revealed that effectiveness of primary schools in the study is at `medium? level on administrators, teachers and school environment variables while it is at `to be improved? level on students and parents variables.Key Words: School Effectiveness, School Effectiveness Variables, Primary Schools
