The contribution of the use of illustrated dictionaries in the fourth grade of primary school to vocabulary acquisition

The aim of this study is to examine the use of illustrated dictionaries in primary school. Mixed method model and sequential pattern were used in there search. Data in there search were collected through the published four different illustrated dictionaries, the illustrated dictionary model developed by there search erand the vocabulary acquisition activity (worksheet), worksheet-Pretest / Post test and semi-structured interview form form. The study groupconsists of 36 students atending in the fourth grade of primary school. The study group was determined using the convenience sampling selection technique. The application took 4 hours a week, a total of 24 lesson hours. The data obtained for the first and third-problems of there search were analyzed by descriptive analysis and content analysis, and the data obtained for these cond sub problems were analyzed through the dependent groups t-test. There is an increase of significant points between the pretest and posttest scores of there search. This in crease is a high in crease. As a result of the 6-week practice, the in crease in thescore of the study group from a very low level to a medium level has led to the conclusion that the illustrated dictionary studies contribute to the vocabulary acquisitionskill. According to there sultsobtained in the study and an increase of significant points, it can be said that the use of illustrated dictionaries in the fourth grade of primary school contributes to vocabulary acquisition. A great majority of the students in the study groupstated that the study was beneficial, they liked it, found it interesting and enjoyable.
