This dissertation offers an in-depth analytical study of four major rhetorical figures—simile, metaphor, figurative language, and metonymy—as addressed in Imam al-Kāzarūnī's marginalia on al-Bayḍāwī's seminal tafsīr. The focus is placed on the Seven Long Surahs (as-Sabʿuṭ-Ṭiwāl) for their richness in rhetorical expressions and the density of al-Kāzarūnī's critical commentary therein. The research systematically identifies al-Kāzarūnī's distinctive positions, especially where he either challenges al-Bayḍāwī's interpretations or addresses longstanding scholarly disputes within the discipline of rhetoric. By doing so, the study contributes an original, application-based examination of a marginal work that has received limited scholarly attention. Structured across five chapters, preceded by an introduction and concluded with a summary of findings, the dissertation opens with a biographical study of al-Kāzarūnī, his scholarly lineage, and an overview of the Seven Long Surahs. Subsequent chapters investigate each rhetorical figure through selected Qur'anic verses, presenting al-Bayḍāwī's analysis, al-Kāzarūnī's critical interventions, supporting or contrasting views from other rhetoricians, and the researcher's synthesis and evaluation. The study's findings emphasize al-Kāzarūnī's analytical rigor, intellectual independence, and methodological consistency across his exegetical engagements—from Sūrat al-Baqarah to the final of the Seven Long Surahs. Moreover, it highlights the aesthetic and communicative functions of rhetorical imagery in the Qur'an, demonstrating their role in clarifying meaning and enhancing expressive precision. The critical review component assesses the strengths and limitations of al-Kāzarūnī's analytical methods, offering selected case studies from his rhetorical analyses.
