Abstract (EN)

Indirect hyperbilirubinemia is characterized by higher than normal levels of bilirubin in newborns and is generally known as physiological jaundice. In this study, it was aimed to examine the vitamin levels, biochemical and hematological parameter changes in infants with indirect hyperbilirubinemia. In the study hemogram and biochemistry blood values were used from jaundiced infants who were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the SBU Van Education and Research Hospital and from blood samples routinely taken from them during the treatment process from the moment of admission to hospitalization and discharge. Demographic characteristics of mothers and infants used in the study are shown in the table. In the study, 20 healthy infants in the control group, while 20 male and 20 female newborns with indirect hyperbilirubinemia were accepted as the patient group, a total of 40 infants. In the serums obtained from all of them via blood vessels in accordance with the procedure; Retinol, α-tocopherol and VitD3 levels were measured using HPLC and Vitamin C was determined spectrophotometrically. The levels of biochemical parameters such as Urea, Glucose, Creatinine, ALT, AST, T. Bilirubin, D. Bilirubin, Uric Acid, Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, Chloride were determined by Cobas c 702 autoanalyzer. Hematological parameters such as WBC, RBC, Hb, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC, PLT, PCT, RDW-CV, RDW-SD, NE were measured by MINDRAY BC-6800 device. Statistically significant decreases were detected in the levels of retinol, α-tocopherol, vitamin D3 and vitamin C in jaundiced babies compared to normal healthy babies. When biochemical parameters were considered, while glucose decreased in the patient group, an increase was detected in urea, total and direct bilirubin and sodium levels. Especially in total and direct bilirubin levels, a significant increase of p≤0.0001 was found in jaundiced babies compared to healthy babies. The increase in indirect bilirubin was also strikingly high as a calculated value. Again, while a decrease was detected in hematological Hb, HCT values in sick babies, an increase was detected in MCH, PCT. All values obtained and differences according to gender in male and female babies were presented in tables in the study. As a result, vitamin levels, which were the main target of the study, were found to be low in children with hyperbilirubinemia, the importance of deficiencies in the development of jaundice and the fact that hyperbilirubinemia would be encountered at normal vitamin levels and the duration of phototherapy would be shortened were emphasized, and it was recommended to clinicians and gynecologists working in this field that A, D, E, and C vitamin supplements should be administered during pregnancy.
