Abstract (EN)

Purpose The standard of knowledge and the states of consciousness and awareness are very important to determine the problems of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, whose life quality and productivity are negatively affected during lifetime, in order to find solutions and deal with the disease. This study is designed to establish the validity and the reliability of the 'Development, validation and clinical assessment of a short questionnaire to assess disease-related knowledge in inflammatory bowel disease patients' in Turkey in addition to define the states of consciousness and the factors that may affect this in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Material And Methods The study includes 150 patients with inflammatory bowel disease who applied to Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine Department of Gastroenterology between January 2015 and June 2015 and fits the inclusion criteria. The questionnaire was performed by face to face interview method and repeated within 2 weeks in order to test the time-dependent reliability. The questionnaire is a simple, self applicable and disease spesific scale consisting 9 questions which were designed to determine the state of consciousness and information about the disease. SPSS 15.0 package is used for statistical analysis. Conclusion The mean age was 47.2±14.0 in patients and 38.4± 13.0 in control group. The average age of the cases were statistically higher in patients than in the control group (p < 0.001). Among the patients 40% were female whilst 51.4% were in the control group with no statistical significant relation between the groups (p < 0.111). From the patients 41.3% were graduated from only elementary school but this percentage was 7.1% in control group supporting the standard of knowledge was significantly higher in control group (p < 0.000). The distribution of the answers were significantly different for all questions except "the use of alcohol" between the patient group and the control group. True answers were given in high rates by patients when compared to control group (p < 0.001). Discussion The short questionnaire of inflammatory bowel disease was found to be answered significantly more accurate in patients rather than healthy volunteers and the standard of knowledge and the state of consciousness were detected as higher in patient group than the control group. The questionnaire was distinctive in patients with inflammatory bowel disease supporting the effect of the questionnaire in understanding the problems of the patients and finding solutions in fighting the disease.
