Retrospective evaluation of disease severity and fecal calprotectin level relationship in inflammatory bowel diseases

Inflammotary bowel diseases dintinguish to two main groups: Ulserative colitis and Crohn disease. The disease has remission and exacerbation periods and affects people with a genetic predisposition although reasons not fully understood. For diagnose and evaluating clinical process there are several activity scores, labratuary tests and invasive procedurs like endoscopy. In this study our aim to show correlation between fecal calprotectin levels and disease severity. In this research, 74 patients who diagnosed with Crohn's disease and 74 patients who diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis are included. Patients files were retrospectively researched and patients demographics, clinical status, laboratory findings were written down. For ulserative colitis patients Truelove-Witts and for Crohn disease patients CDAI score were used as marker of disease severity. Fecal calprotectin levels were compared with disease severity and WBC, neutrophil, Hgb, platelet, ESH, CRP levels. In patient with UC, hemoglobin value decreases with increasing disease severity while hemoglobin decreases with increasing disease severity and CRP and ESR values increase in CD. Calporectin levels increased with increasing desease severtiy in both groups. In patients with UC, calprotectin levels were higher in active desease period (p=0.002). Smilarly, CD was also statistically significant (p=0.009). The calprotectin level was found to be higher in both diseases as the duration of the disease increased. There was no significant correlation between the localization of the disease and calprotectin levels in both groups and there was no correlation between the severity of the disease and platelet count in both groups.
