Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of home educational resources and using internet for instructional purposes on eighth grade students' mathematics and science achievement in Türkiye and Singapore. In this context, mathematics and science ability estimations were determined by using the response patterns of students from Türkiye and Singapore who participated in TIMSS 2019. The findings of this study, in which structural equation modeling analyses were used, show that home educational resources and internet usage for instructional purposes in Singapore is significantly higher than in Türkiye. Although the use of the internet for instructional purposes had a positive effect on mathematics and science achievement in Singapore, it had a negative effect on mathematics and science achievement in Türkiye. The effect of home educational resources on math and science achievement is similar for both countries. Accordingly, the presence of home educational resources has a positive effect on achievement in both Türkiye and Singapore. This study is important in that it reports that the use of the Internet for instructional purposes in Tükiye does not have a positive effect on mathematics and science achievement.
