Abstract (EN)
At present, nearly 35% of global energy demand and corresponding carbon dioxide outputs are created by the building sector. This study examines and matches the life cycle energy consumption (LCEC) and carbon dioxide emissions (LCCE) of a historic listed building (BT1) built in 1875, a novel building (BT2) constructed with the most recent building components with compatible plans of the historic listed building and the historic listed building thereafter the restoration and structural retrofit (BT3) via utilizing actual findings from the building site of an existing project in Gaziantep, Turkey. It is estimated that the use phase was dominant throughout the building's service life and BT1 has the highest use energy demand. LCEC and LCCE values of the BT1, BT2, and BT3 are calculated to be 102.63, 70.13, 78.07 GJ/m2, and 14.18, 9.75, and 10.06 tons of CO2 per m2 (tCO2/m2), respectively. With the present practices and methodologies, the retrofit and restoration of the historic building raises the embodied energy (EE) value by 56.6%. Sustainable restoration and retrofit of historic buildings should be executed by employing proper techniques respecting the conservation principles of history, environment, and energy. Key Words: Energy consumption, Embodied energy, Historic listed building, Carbon dioxide emissions, Life cycle assessment.
