Abstract (EN)

The transformation in Iran's state identity that resulted from the 1979 Iranian Islamic Revolution has been reflected in various ways in its foreign policy. Post-revolutionary Iran's new state identity has addressed questions such as "who am I?" and "who are others?" This study, which creates a theoretical framework from the definition of self and other, strengthens the post-revolutionary construction of Iran's national, religious and revolutionary identity through the discourses of Iranian elites. The Hostage Crisis that took place in the first years of the revolution; the Iran-Iraq War that started in 1980 and lasted for eight years; the nuclear and Palestine issues that occupied an important place in Iran's foreign policy, and finally the Syrian civil war has been selected as multiple case studies. Using the interpretive research method, the reflections of national, religious, and revolutionary identity on foreign policy will be analyzed. In this respect, the study shows that it is not possible to locate a single and stable state identity that affects Iran's foreign policy. Discursively, identities are defined and redefined by Iran's decision-makers. In the foreign policy reflections of Iran's multiple identities, these identities could be contending, complementary, or competing. The results obtained in this thesis reveal how the aforementioned multiple identities have shaped post-revolutionary foreign policy.
