Abstract (EN)

Loneliness is a universal life experience and a negative psychological state. People can experience loneliness at sometimes in their lives. As such, loneliness can be born at workplace and it negatively affects employees. Hovewer the loneliness is a very common experience, there is a very little emprical studies on the effect of loneliness at workplace on the employees' intention to leave. We did not find any research discussing the effect of academicians' loneliness in Turkey on the intention to quit in the literature scene. For this reason the aims of this thesis are a) to determine the levels of workplace loneliness of academicians in Turkey, b) to examine the effects of some explanatory variables such as age, gender, marital status, science field, academic title, managerial position, course load, pay satisfaction and social media on the loneliness at workplace, c) to research whether there is a relationship between the loneliness at workplace and academicians' intention to leave, and finally d) to reveal whether loneliness at workplace has an effect on the academicians' intention to leave. A total of 251 academicians from the state universities of Bilecik, Eskişehir and Bursa provinces participated in the survey. We found that the academicians have a low level of loneliness at workplace by examining data set. In addition to this, data analysis showed that age, science field, academic title, managerial position, course load, and social media variables have not significantly effect on the loneliness at workplace. Contrary to this results, we determined that gender, marital status and pay satisfaction have significantly effect on the academicians' loneliness at workplace. As a result of corelation analysis, we explored that there is a pozitive and medium corelation between the loneliness at workplace and academicians' intention to leave. Additionally, we found that loneliness at workplace has an effect on the academicians' intention to leave
