Abstract (EN)
This study explores the potential of theatre art to overcome social barriers between hearing-impaired and hearing individuals, foster empathy and contribute to social transformation through an inclusive understanding of art. Depending on the transformative power of art, the research investigates the impact of participation in theatrical activities on the self-confidence, sense of belonging, and social visibility of hearing-impaired individuals, while also examining changes in the attitudes of hearing individuals toward disability. The first chapter of the thesis presents a literature review on the historical development and cultural context of sign language. The second chapter analyzes the shared expressive elements of sign language and theatre, such as gestures, facial expressions, and body language, and discusses the intersection of these elements through examples from physical theatre, including Meyerhold's biomechanics, Jacques Lecoq's technique, and pantomime. İn the third chapter, the applied example is analysed; selected scene from Shakespeare's Richard III was performed simultaneously in spoken and sign language, followed by an audience survey to gather feedback. The findings demonstrate that theatre is not only a medium for personal expression but also an effective tool for social inclusion, intercultural understanding, and the transformation of societal perceptions of disability. Moreover, the study reveals a significant increase in empathy and awareness among hearing individuals and highlights the empowering effect of theatrical engagement on hearing-impaired participants.
