Late Antique jewelry and personal ornaments found at the excavations of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums at Yenikapı, Sirkeci and Vezneciler

This dissertation aims to evaluate Late Antique jewelry and ornaments found during the Metro-Marmaray excavations at Yenikapi, Sirkeci, and Vezneciler districts of Istanbul conducted by the Istanbul Archaeological Museums in 2004-2015. Among the artifacts recovered in the excavations were gold and bronze fibulae; gold rings set with precious and semi-precious stones; silver, bronze, and iron finger rings; necklaces, pendants, and amulets of gold and semi-precious stones; bronze bracelets, gold and brass (?) earrings, as well as hairpins of bronze and composite materials such as silver-bronze and silver-bone. The objects studied were dated based on their stratigraphic contexts and by comparing them with similar published contemporaneous examples. Attempts were also made to assess their cultural affiliations, the workshops in which they were likely produced, and, where sufficient data was available, their geographical distributions, their use, purpose of production, and the persons who may have owned them.
