Abstract (EN)

The architectural structures of the Mevlevi Order, which is based on the teachings of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, particularly the semahane spaces, are examined in this study in terms of the impact of natural lighting. Mevlevi thought is a Sufi understanding that focuses on the inner journey of the human being and universal love. The semahane, as the spatial counterpart of this philosophy, is a special place where mystical rituals are performed, and where the spiritual atmosphere is integrated with architecture. The study consists of four main sections: Historical and theoretical framework: The development of Mevlevi thought, the general features of Mevlevihane structures, and how natural lighting is addressed in these spaces have been examined. The architectural layout and spatial configuration of significant asitane-type Mevlevihanes in Istanbul (Galata, Yenikapı, Bahariye, Kasımpaşa) have been detailed. The role of light in building physics, comfort conditions, and calculation methods are explained; 3D modeling has been performed using DialuxEvo 13.0 software. In these analyses, TS-EN 12464-1 standards were used as a reference. In light of the obtained data, it has been revealed that natural light played an important role as a design criterion in semahane structures. Suggestions have been made to ensure lighting comfort during ceremonies or alternative uses of these spaces today. The study also aims to contribute to future restoration efforts. This research presents both the spiritual dimension of Mevlevi thought and the technical aspects of architectural structures together.
