The Catalogue study of carpets and kilims from different regions in the example of İzmir Etnography Museum

The attemps to found a museum in İzmir were first initiated in 1927 by Kazım Dirik. Aziz Ogan and Selahattin Kantar, who worked in this field. Ethnographical works in İzmir were preserved at İzmir Ethnography Museum and İzmir Archeological Museum until 1988. İzmir Ethnography Museum was inaugurated in November 1988. The ethnographical works come to the museum with four ways: purchase, donation, confiscation and transfer from government institutions. The works gathered from the ways mentioned above are first recorded. According to their characteristics and conditions, they are later either displayed or kept in the store. In the museum, there have benn 156 weaves in total: 32 carpets and 28 flat weaves on display and 26 carpets and 70 flat weaves in the store. It was seen that wool was chiefly used in the carpets and kilims in the museum when the raw materials were examined. Cotton, silk, and goad hair followed woll. With Turkish knot and Pazirik carpet, the Turks, who pioneered in the art of carpet making, have still an important place in this art today. Of the fifty-eight carpets in the museum, fifty-five were made with Turkish knots and three were made with Persian knots. During the examination of the flat weaves, of the forty-nine flat weaves, it was determined that thirty-two were made with kilim technique and seventeen were made with cicim, zili and sumak techniques. Furthermore, of the thirty-three flat weaves used for carrying, it was found that eight were made with kilim and twenty-five were made with cicim, zili and sumak techniques. The carpets in the museum are of medium or fine quality. There has been no carpet with 100x100 knotquality in the museum. The origins of the weaves in the museum are Kula in carpet and Helvacıköy in kilims.
