Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT Master Thesis THREE ARMED STAR POLYMER SYNTHESIS OF ISOBORNYLMETHACRYLATE Fatma Demet NİKSARLI Firat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciencies, Department of Chemistry 2005, Page: 67 l,3,5-(2'-Bromo-2'-methylpropionato)benzene was used as a threerunctional initiator in the synthesis of three-armed star polymer of isobornylmethacrylate (IBMA) and their copolymers with ethylmethacrylate (EMA) via the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with a Cu(I)Br/2,2'- bipyridine catalitic system at 1 1 0 °C. Also, the free radical polymerization of IBMA was carried out in presence of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and 1,4-dioxane at 60 °C. The homo- and copolymers were characterized by FT-IR, 'H-NMR techniques. The compositions of the copolymers were calculated from 'H-NMR spectra. The diblock copolymer of poly[(IBMA-co-EMA)-b-EMA)] was synthesized using poly(IBMA-co-EMA) macroinitiator and Cu(I)B^py catalitic system showed an inefficient polymerization of ethylmethacrylate with low molecular weight and polydispersity. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution were obtained by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). For copolymerization system, their monomer reactivity ratios were obtained by using Kelen-Tüdös and Fineman-Ross methods. The thermal behavior of three armed poly(IBMA) and its copolymers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal degradation products of three-armed poly(IBMA) heated to 310 °C was characterized by GC-MS and FT- IR. Keywords: ATRP, three-armed polymer, synthesis, monomer reactivity ratio, thermal degradation VI
