Abstract (EN)

This study examines the changes that emerged within the Turkish Gendarmerie Organization, particularly regarding uniform and symbol regulations, following its affiliation with the Ministry of Interior. The aim of this study is to examine the modifications made to the uniforms of the Turkish Gendarmerie Organization during the subordination process to the Ministry of Interior and to demonstrate that this change is a symbolic transformation conveying messages of loyalty to the state, integration with the nation, civilianization, and professionalization, rather than merely a visual novelty. The research was conducted using a qualitative design; data were obtained through document analysis and resolved using the descriptive analysis method. In this context, the Law No. 2803 on the Organization, Duties, and Powers of the Gendarmerie, the Gendarmerie General Command Uniform Regulation dated March 31, 2020, relevant Decree Laws, official documents, and visual materials were examined. The findings indicate that while the traditional khaki color were phased out, the blue/navy blue uniform color, the Turkish Flag on the right arm, and the circular unit emblem on the left arm were specifically emphasized. Furthermore, the study reveals that these changes strengthened institutional belonging and repositioned the Gendarmerie by symbolizing its transition from a military status to a civilian/general law enforcement identity. In conclusion, Gendarmerie uniforms have evolved into a powerful communication tool reflecting the historical memory, national values, emphasis on sovereignty, and democratic resilience of the Republic of Turkey, rather than being solely a service outfit.
