A research on the fact of violence against women and its representation in the press

That femicides are becoming widespread day after day and the news about those is headlined conspicuously in the press with the intention of reaching a greater circulation without paying attention to self-censor also brings to mind the question whether the news is fanning the violence against women. In order to find answers to the question, five newspapers in the press were selected and the newspapers' handling ways of the news over violence against women was tried to be examined. In the study titled "A Research on the Fact of Violence Against Women and Its Representation in the Press" the subjects such as national and regional press' handling ways of the news over violence against women, the size of the news, the size of the place the news occupies in a page or in the newspaper in general, the size of the headline used, use of photos, in which pages the news is, etc. are examined. Cumhuriyet, a national broadsheet newspaper, and Hürriyet, Sabah and Habertürk, three national tabloid newspapers with the largest circulation and Yeni Asir, a regional newspaper, were analysed in this study. 7.10.2011 when the news titled "The latest point at violence against women" was published in Habertürk, was selected as the start date of the study. Content analysis method was used in the study. The news of violence against women was dealt among the news in the 5 newspapers for 5 days in October and December 2011, January, February and March 2012 each. Comparisons and examinations such as in which newspaper the news is given place most, the photos are used most, in which pages the news is given place most etc. were made. Comparisons between the newspapers were made via tables and charts. Key Words: Women, violence, press, violence against women.
