University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) library Turkish manuscripts collection No. 2395 cönk (review-text)

This study encompasses the analysis and text sections of the cönk registered as "Cönk 2395" under the archive number LSC.0896 in the Turkish Manuscripts Collection of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Library. The cönk subject to this analysis measures 177x79 mm and consists of 135 folios. The vast majority of the texts were written in black ink, while some couplets were written in red ink. Although no direct information regarding the compiler of the work could be found, structural similarities in the handwriting characteristics suggest that the cönk was penned by a single compiler. The date records of 1240, 1270, and 1278 [AH] found in the cönk indicate that the work may have been written in the 19th century. The cönk contains a total of 418 texts, consisting of 406 verse and 12 prose pieces. In the first part of the study, which consists of three main sections, the formal, linguistic, and content characteristics of the cönk are analyzed in detail. In terms of form, it has been determined that both aruz and syllabic verse forms were used together in the cönk, and when evaluated in terms of content, it was found that a variety of different topics were treated in the texts. Among the poets whose names were identified in the cönk, pioneering figures of classical literature and prominent representatives of folk literature take place together. In the second section of the study, information is provided about the lives of these aforementioned poets and their poems included in the cönk. In the third section, the entirety of the cönk has been transliterated from Ottoman Turkish to Latin letters.
