Kâmûs-i Türkî is in scan dictionary and Turkish dictionary vocabulary on education

Kâmûs-i Türkî is a Turkish dictionary prepared by Şemseddin Sami and first published in 1901. It is important in that it is the first Turkish-to-Turkish dictionary with the word Turk in its name. Another important feature of Kâmûs-ı Türkî is that Arabic and Persian words found in Classical Ottoman Turkish but not used in the daily language of the people are not included in the dictionary, and words of Turkish origin are given priority. With the idea of enriching Turkish language, the usable words of Eastern Turkish and Old Oghuz Turkish are also included. Kâmûs-ı Türkî was updated by Tercüman Newspaper in 1985 and republished as 'Basic Turkish Dictionary' (Buran, 2015: 156). The Scan Dictionary is a dictionary of Turkish words that have been scanned from 227 works written in Turkey's Turkish from the 13th century to the present day and are not used today or are used with different meanings and forms (TS I, 2019: V). This Turkish Dictionary, the first edition of which was published by the Turkish Language Association in 1945 and has been published eleven so far, is one of the main works of today's Turkish lexicography (TÜS, 2019: XV). In this study, we primarily aimed to reveal the existence of informal education besides formal education in Turkish history with language indicators. Based on the Scan Dictionary, Kâmûs-ı Türkî and Contemporary Turkish Dictionary, we aimed before all else in this study to determine the words that fall into the field of education in the vocabulary of the Turkish language. Based on the dictionaries examined, we identified a total of 6.401 educational terms, including 568 terms related to common education in at least two dictionaries and 5.833 terms related to education in only one dictionary. We tried to provide easy access to the meaning related to education by circling the number at the beginning of the meanings of 6.401 terms related to education. This number has given us the opportunity to evaluate education in the vocabulary of Turkish. Our study basically consists of an introduction and four parts. In the introduction, firstly, relevant information about the area of language, meaning and concept and about the concept area of lexicology and vocabulary are given. In the second chapter, under the title of education, information about education, meaning and concept area, education in Turkish society with its main lines, the vocabulary of Turkish about education, professions related to education and subjects related to teaching are given. In the third chapter, information about our scanned works, Kâmûs-ı Türkî, Scan Dictionary and Turkish Dictionary, is dealt with. In the fourd chapter, the words related to education were determined based on the scanned dictionaries, they were classified under various sub-headings in chronological order and the words with testimonies were given together with their testimonies. In the conclusion, the numerical data representation of the education terms found in the scanned dictionaries and the vocabulary related to education are treated with a general evaluation. I believe that this study, which includes the place of education in Turkish language, culture, and history, will make a great contribution especially to the field of Turkish language and educational sciences.
