Abstract (EN)

In this study, behavior of composite beams strengthened at tension region with carbon fiber reinforced polymer sheets is analyzed using computer aided structural analysis programs (Sap2000, Finite Element Analysis). Structural analysis of the composite beam strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer sheets is also controlled experimentally. Results contained from both structural analysis and experimental testing are compared, and results are reported. For experimental study, a 300 cm long composite beam, produced using an IPE200 structural steel beam, 75 cm wide, 10 cm deep concrete deck with 20 MPa concrete strength and Q443/335 steel web, is used. Lower flange (tension region) of IPE200 is strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets to increase tension strength of composite beam. The sample is tested under bending using four-point loading and displacements under load are measured. In experimental testing, it is seen that reinforced concrete deck carried most of the compressive component of bending and CFRP strengthening helped increase tension capacity of the steel section of composite beam. Testing results assured the structural analysis of the composite beam, thus the same analysis may be used for different size and different material strength of composite beams. The literature is also confirmed the results reported in this study.
