The investigation of the planning and implementation process of Kayseri railway system

The rapid urbanisation process in Turkey in recent decades has caused the rapid growing cities and the problems related to growth. As a result of constant policies, the wheel-transportation systems that consumes energy on higher level, depends on foreign sources, have negative effects on the environment, cannot use limited road surface efficiently and have higher traffic accident rates have been used for years. Fortunately, the tendency on preferring the human-oriented, friendly, ecologic, realistic and economic systems that use the current datum and infrastructure and embracing new methods including the direction of transportation demand have taken place in recent years.This thesis aims to investigate the railway systems that have been used mainly in large cities on the case of Kayseri metropolitan city. In the thesis, the physical, environmental and economic features of the Kayseri railway system and its planning and construction process are examined.The thesis includes a literature study about the railway systems in the World and Turkey in historical context, with the comparison to other transportation systems. A detailed research is realised on the planning, constructing and application process of the railway system between 2000 and 2009. In this context, the project reports that reached the number of 8 between 2000 and 2008 are explored and criticised if they predict that: they consider the master plan decisions, link the green transportation systems (pedestrians, bicycle etc.), integrate different transportation types into the system and have transferring/change points. Furthermore, the thesis observes the realisation degree of the planning decisions in order to criticise the appropriateness of the predictions in sustainable manner.Keywords:Urban transportation, railway systems, public transportaion, Kayseri
