The investigation of the effect pine honey on the wound healing

Objective: Apitherapy is the use of bee products as complementary therapy. Considering the increasing antibiotic resistance day by day, it has been concluded that honey, which has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, may have a positive contribution to wound healing. The present study aims to investigate the effects of chestnut honey on open wound healing. Material and Methods: Considering the wound healing time, the study duration was determined as 5 days. A total of 30 wounds were created on the back of 15 mice, 2 wounds on each mouse. Honey was applied to the wound on the left side of the back of 5 randomly selected mice, and chitosan was applied to the wound on the right side. While honey was applied to the wound on the left side of the back of 5 randomly selected mice, no application was made to the right side. Chitosan was applied to the wound on the left side of the back of the remaining 5 mice, but no application was made to the wound on the right side. Thus, 10 wounds were created each in the honey-applied trial group, the chitosan-applied sham group, and the non-applied control group. Thus, Honey gel/Chitosan, Honey gel/Control or Chitosan/Control wounds were obtained in 1 animal. Results: No significant difference was detected between the groups in terms of wound measurement areas on day 1. A statistically significant difference was detected between all groups on the second, third, fourth and fifth days (P<0.001). Wound healing was detected fastest in the group where chestnut honey gel was applied. It was determined that the chitosan group healed faster than the control group. Conclusion: As a result, it was observed that the gel form of chestnut honey accelerated wound healing. It is believed that its use as a wound gel will contribute to clinical practice.
