Abstract (EN)

The aim of the study is to evaluate the visual perception level of children and adults who ise a 9-60 year old cochlear implant, who use hearing aids and who have normal hearing and the timewall and clock tests found in The Psychology Experiment Building Language (Pebl) and investigation whether there is any difference between the groups. The research was a cross-sectional analytical study. It was carried out in the Otorhinolaryngology Department of Ege University Hospital. The research involved a total of 67 children and adults between 9 and 60 years of age. Among these children and adults, 27 used cochlear implants, 20 used hearing aids and 20 had normal hearing. The research was carried out between October 2016 and October 2017 after Ethical Committee's permission was granted. The timewall and clock tests that is found in the The Psychology Experiment Building Language test battery were applied on the participants consisted of children and adults who used cochlear implants, who used hearing aids and who had normal hearing. When the participants who use cochlear implants, who use hearing aid and who had normal hearing compared according to the timewall and clock tests in the study, a difference was observed on the success rate of visual perception between the groups. It was found that the group which made the difference was the normal hearing group when the outcomes were evaluated according to the timewall and the clock tests. As a result, visual perception impairment influences the ability of communicating and interpreting messages that are spoken or pointed out of the individuals with hearing loss. Individuals with this kind of deficiency can not distinguish the lip movements in a healthy way, and they fail to lip-read. Failure to develop visual perception will cause individuals with hearing loss to fall behind in their social and educational life.
