The role of international standardization in accommodation enterprises and analysis of Turkish applications

The aim of this Study is to state the awareness of the Turkish Hoteliers on Standardization in International Hospitality Industry and find out the degree and their compliance with these Standards. In order to attain the objectives of the Study, a Literature survey was made initially and the Standards relevant in International Hotel Management have been detected. The secondary data found through literature survey, had been unified with the experiences and observations of the researcher which he has gained on the sector of international hospitality and travel management. A field research then had been designed with the contribution of professionals and academics from the hospitality sector and findings of the literature survey. The survey has been administered on the seven politic zones of Turkey. Data collected through structured questionnaire were analyzed by the means of descriptive statistics, hypotheses tests and multivariate statistical tests. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) was used for the analyses.The factors considered important by the representatives of Turkish Accommodation industry on the international standardization have been explored by the means of explanatory factor analysis. The expected benefits of the new factors are then detected by the regard of the professional hoteliers.The study found that the hotel managers and the owners do have medium awareness of international standards that are relevant on hospitality industry whereas they have weak standardization. It is found that the hoteliers do believe the explored factors will enhance the security and safety of the personnel; the safety and security of the guests; the productivity; and the rate of retention of the staff and diminish their turnover; efficiency of the use of the resources; the satisfaction of the guests. It has also been found that the hoteliers do not believe that the standardization will enhance the share of market of their hotels.Key words: Standard, standardization, international hospitality management standards, Turkish hospitality industry representatives.
