Treatment of lesions found on the skin and mucous membranesof dogs with cryosurgery

Objective: It was aimed to treat the lesions found on the skin and mucous membranes of dogs brought to Aydın Adnan Menderes University Veterinary Faculty Animal Hospital Department of Surgery with cryosurgery. Materials and Methods: Study material 20 dogs of different breeds, ages, sexes and weight with lesions on the skin and mucosa were included in the Aydın Adnan Menderes University Veterinary Faculty Animal Hospital Department of Surgery. A complete physical examination was performed on the patients before the cryosurgical procedure, whole blood, complete biochemical parameters were evaluated and bidirectional (V/D-L/L) lung radiographs were displayed. The size of the lesions was measured and recorded. Freezing process was applied to the lesions with Brymill B-700, CRY-AC cryo spray device using liquid nitrogen by spray method. Results: A total of 20 dogs, including 11 female and 9 male, were included in the study. The size of the lesions of the dogs included in the study was determined as <0.5 cm (n=8), between 0.5-1 cm (n=27) and >1 cm (n=7). The size of the lesions of the dogs included in the study was determined as <0.5 cm (n=8). Dec.0.5-1 cm (n=7). If a patient has more than one lesion, cryosurgery was performed separately. The procedure was repeated to patients who did not recover with single cryosurgery. Freezing-melting cycle was applied to one patient 6 times, freezing-melting cycle to 11 patients 7 times, freezing-melting cycle to 6 patients 8 times, freezing-melting cycle to 1 patient 9 times, freezing-melting cycle to 1 patient 10 times. Cryosurgery was performed on 17 of our patients without using any anesthetic agent. One of our three patients was sedated because he was mobile during the procedure. Since another surgical intervention was performed on two of our patients, the cryosurgery application was completed under general anesthesia. The follow-up of the wound formed in the area after the application was performed and recorded regularly every 2 weeks for each patient. Deceleration times of patients vary according to the size of the lesion and on average, lesions smaller than 0.5 cm were formed at 7.5 weeks (52.5 days), lesions between 0.5-1 cm were formed at 8.38 weeks (58.56 days), lesions larger than 1 cm were formed at 13.14 weeks (91.98 days). Relapse has not been observed in any of our patients after cryosurgery. As a result, it has been observed that cryosurgery is effective in the treatment of lesions found on the skin and mucosa, it is an alternative application, especially for geriatric patients with a risk of anesthesia. Patient owners do not accept the risk of anesthesia and operative intervention, cryosurgery is simple, fast, cost-effective and has also been a method of interest to patient owners, especially because it offers outpatient treatment opportunities to patients.
