Solid waste logistics in cruise shipping

Abstract (EN)

Cruise Shipping is one of the Marine Tourism activities, has gained importance in recent years in the world as well as our city, even Izmir is now the preferred cruise tourism has become one of the major ports. In this study, the number of passengers from cruise ships left the port and the amount of solid waste were investigated at the port of Izmir from 2006 to the first four months of 2011. In order to determine the capacity of the solid waste collection will be built in waste pool, estimated the number of passengers has great importance. To estimate the number of passengers to the port of Izmir in the future, the three methods were applied. These Seasonal Decomposition, Exponential Smoothing and ARIMA estimated modelling. The study used the SPSS 16.0 statistical package program. With these three methods, the number of passengers also re-calculated.After calculating the number of passengers, they are associated with the amount of solid waste produced per month with the monthly total number of passengers and calculation is made for the total waste amounts in the future. Then, based on the number of passengers calculated from the total amount of waste in Annex 5 to the MARPOL annexes have been separated. These values may change, deletions the port of Izmir to take between destinations, or destinations off the World Cruise Lines. Taking advantage of these values, a waste management can be applied at the port is proposed.This study, we examined in particular, solid wastes from cruise ships which came to the Port of Izmir, Environmental Waste Management practices and recommendations can be made within the framework established. Results obtained, planners, legislators, and potential operators are provided benefits.
