Abstract (EN)

During the globalization process in which the context of the nation-state changes and new actors become active in international system; political, economical, social and cultural differences have brought about new challenges. Influence of international and transnational organizations which shape water politics and the transformation of local water policies by this neoliberal impact have raised social reactions. This study focuses on the outcomes of local social movements that protest against water politics shaped by international organizations, and the global water movement created in accordance with these outcomes. The main problem of the study is reactions against capitalist/neoliberal water politics. In the process of the commodification of water by neo-liberalism which triggered social movements against the local water policies and of the transformation of social movements in the framework of alternative forums, it would be discussed if there would be basis for the institutionalization of global water movement.By observing the local response to the global water politics in different countries within the framework of social movements? theories, the purpose of this thesis is to examine possibility of the transformation of global water movement to an organized structure. In this context, by analyzing how local reactions transform into a social movement, it is possible to determine common points of the local social movements related to water occurring in different localities. Meanwhile, it must be discussed how and under what conditions local social movements could be institutionalized.Throughout the thesis an interdisciplinary approach was adopted. For this reason the fundamental concepts and methods of international relations, sociology, ecology and public administration have been used. Local reactions against global water politics and global impact of local reactions were discussed by utilizing Critical Theory.Outcomes of the local social movements related to water; basic principles and the demands of the global water movement are the main pillars of the institutionalization of these movements. As a result, the institutionalization of glocal water movement could be effective in terms of transformation of water policies and achieving global results which could enlarge critics against capitalist/neoliberal system.
