Abstract (EN)
SMEs are considered the backbone of most economies, yet they are facing challenges in their efforts to keep up with new customer expectations emerged from globalization. However, large enterprises utilize their resources and invest in practices such as SCM to reduce costs and evidently gain competitive advantage. Unfortunately, because they don't have these opportunities, SMEs are only able to focus on individual benefits while managing their supply chains. Since logistics activities make up a big part of supply chain cost, companies put their efforts mostly on managing these. Integrated logistics and various supply chain coordination mechanisms such as supplier contracts, flow coordination and IT mechanisms are suggested as solutions to this issue. This research serves as an exploratory case study to reveal the current logistics process map (via Transportation Value Stream Mapping) and coordination level between a large food packaging manufacturer, its European customers and logistics partners. The aim of the study is to understand coordination problems that occur in the real world even in the best possible conditions (since the focal firm is among the leaders of the food packaging sector in its origin country, Turkey) and to propose solutions that are expected to also benefit SMEs. The study suggests utilizing 2 coordinated and integrated logistics solution frameworks to problems. These problems are determined via semi-structured interviews, meetings, workshops and data provided by the company. However, due to time limits and data collection challenges, the suggestions remained in-detailed in terms of the exact network design and prices. Employees in various executive-level positions of the company shared their opinions on feasibility of suggested solutions via Likert scale questionnaires. Results were analyzed and importance of further utilizing joint optimization, via including logistics and warehousing partners' data, is strongly emphasized.
