Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to date oceanic crustal rocks by SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer) within the frame of MSc thesis. Kızıldağ (Hatay) ophiolite comprises the best-preserved Neotethyan oceanic lithospheric remnants. Size of the zircons range from 12-150 µm. Although some of the zircons show patchy and skeletal zonning, they do not display clear zonning in general. They are magmatic in origin (Th/U= 0.34-3.47). Ten samples from the mafic and felsic crustal rocks of the Kızıldağ (Hatay) ophiolite yielded zirkon U-Pb ages ranging from 90.6±6.4 to 97.7±1.1 Ma. Duration of the suprasubduction zone (SSZ) type oceanic crust formation has been defined between 1.3-7.2 My based on overlapping crystallization ages at 1σ standart deviation. When one considers the minimum (84.2 My)and maximum (98.8 My)ages obtained from the Kızıldağ (Hatay) ophiolite,it is clear that the closure of the Southern Neotethyan oceanic basin during Cenomanian-Campanian due to north-dipping subduction, ophiolite emplacement onto Arabian continental margin and the oldest stratigraphic unit (Maastrichtian) covering the emplaced-ophiolite are in agreement within the Eastern Mediterranean geodynamic evolution.
