Abstract (EN)
Introduction and Aim: This research was aimed to determine the effect of smoking factor on postoperative respiratory system complications in patients undergoing laparoscopic abdominal surgery. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on 299 patients who were admitted to the general surgery service of Istanbul Acıbadem International Hospital between January 2018 and December 2019 and underwent laparoscopic abdominal surgery. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) for Windows 22.0 program was used for statistical analysis. Numbers, percentages, mean and standard deviation were used as descriptive statistical methods in the evaluation of the data. The distribution of descriptive features by smoking status was tested by chi-square analysis. The differentiation status of continuous variables according to smoking status was evaluated by comparing with independent group t-test. Results: In the retrospective study, it was observed that the patient group participating in our study respiratory system complications developed in 22.4% of smokers, and respiratory system complications developed in only 7.3% of non-smokers. detected. In our study subjects, the mean value of the postoperative oxygen saturation percentage in non-smokers and the postoperative oxygen saturation percentage in smokers were higher than the average value. Conclusion: After laparoscopic abdominal surgery, there is a risk of post-operative respiratory system complications in patients as a result of the effects of both the operation and intra-abdominal constant pressure air. Patients who smoke have a higher risk of developing complications. Necessary training should be given to the patients within the framework of pre-operative nursing service and they should be operated under the best conditions.
