A study on the relationship between high school students' big five personality traits and career anxiety

This research is a descriptive study in the relational survey model which examines the relationship between high school students' career anxiety and five factor personality traits. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between career anxiety and five factor personality traits and to investigate the predictor of career anxiety of five factor personality traits. The aim of this study is to examine whether career anxiety differs according to gender, type of school, perceived achievement and perceived income. The sample of the study consisted of 282 high school students (127 females and 155 males) attending 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades in four high schools located in the central districts of Adana. The age range of the participants ranged from 14 to 18 years. In the research, Career Anxiety Scale was used for data about career anxiety of the adolescents and Five Factor Personality Traits Scale was used for data about personality traits. For personal information, personal information form prepared by the researcher was used. Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Multiple Regression Analysis, One Way Analysis of Variance and t Test for Independent Groups were used in the analysis of the data. According to the correlation analysis findings, it was found that there was a significant positive correlation between career anxiety and neuroticism personality trait of students, and a weak negative correlation between career anxiety and responsibility and compliance. No significant relationship was found between career anxiety and extroversion and openness personality traits. According to the results of the regression analysis, the five factor personality traits of the students explained 19% of the variance in career anxiety of the sub-dimensions of neuroticism and compliance. According to this, while neuroticism personality trait positively predicts career anxiety, compatibility predicts career trait negativity of personality trait. Extroversion, responsibility and openness personality traits do not predict career anxiety. In addition, as a result of this study, career anxiety of female students was significantly higher than male students' career anxiety. According to perceived success, career anxiety of students with medium achievement perception is significantly higher than that of students with high achievement perception. No significant relationship was found between students' career anxiety and school type and perceived income variables.
