Manipulation in the context of Macintyre's view of virtue ethics

Manipulation emerges as one of the great problems of our time. We often see this problem especially in politics, management, economy, psychology, social relations, and daily life. The common feature of the problem in all these areas is the ethical aspect of manipulation. Addressing this problem in the context of MacIntyre's view of virtue ethics may help us walk a path in research on manipulation. The aim of this thesis is to reveal the disguises of manipulation and reveal that manipulation is ethical problem. In the first chapter of the thesis, Aristotle's ethical view is discussed in outline. The main reason for considering Aristotle's view is that MacIntyre's view of virtue ethics is based on Aristotle's view of virtue. Before looking at 'MacIntyre's Aristotle', it seems necessary to present Aristotle's views based on his works to correctly evaluate what MacIntyre puts forward. MacIntyre's ethical view is included in the second chapter of the thesis. Discussing MacIntyre's views is important to show why manipulation should be considered from a MacIntyrean perspective. His criticism of emotivism, social analysis, historical examination of virtues, ethical view and definitions of virtue appear to be important in evaluating manipulation ethically. In the third chapter, MacIntyre's thoughts about manipulation are discussed and the connection between manipulation and emotivism is revealed. As MacIntyre did in his historical analysis, we tried to show the thought at the source of manipulation by making a historical review. This idea is that manipulation is essentially self-interested for the doer, making others do his/her own wishes while making it appear as if the request belongs to the maker. In order to understand the self-interested manipulative activities created by manipulation, managers and politics, institution-practice relationships, and professions are evaluated in terms of manipulative activities by looking at the social reflection. The issue of post-truth is discussed as an example of the social effect created by manipulation. As a result of MacIntyrean review and interpretation regarding the manipulation; manipulation is a serious ethical problem, it affects people's choices, decisions, and in short, their actions through propaganda, thus reducing people to tools; it turns out that this way the tries to fit the desired type of person and these ethical problems are overlooked. It follows that avoid from manipulation is only possible with an attitude towards internal goods.
