ABSTRACTMasters ThesisTHE ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS IN FIGHTINGDRUG ADDICTION(Case of Elazığ City)Mehmet Vefa ÇEL KUniversity of Fırat, Institute of Social SciencesDepartment of Educational SciencesJune 2006, Pages:XIV+146In this study, we tried to investigate the roles and importance of high school teachersin Elazığ city center about fighting drug use and addiction which is one of the most importantproblems. We tried to determine the roles of high school teachers, who have important dutyand responsibility in fighting drug use and addiction.A five-point Likert-style scale that was developed by the researcher was used in thestudy. The data were analyzed and interpreted using SPSS 12.0 packet programme. The datawas analyzed. The data were analyzed by running Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS 12.0) program. In a prior examination, when the distribution of the data was found tobe non normal, non-parametric statistical techniques were used in the analyses of the dataobtained from the study. Among the techniques used is Kruskal-Wallis H for testing thedifferences in terms of work experience, school type, education level variables. In the case asignificant difference was found in Kruskal-Wallis H test, Mann-Whitney U test was usedfurthermore to determine among which specific groups the difference was significant. Whenthe distribution of the data was found normal, parametric statistical techniques, one wayanova and independent groups t test were used. Significance level was accepted as 0,05.With the study, we tried to determine if there were any statistically significantdifferences in the opinions of the teachers toward fighting with drug use and addiction interms of age, gender, school type and work experience and some recommendations areoffered in the framework of the study.With the study, while no statistically significant difference was found among theviews of the teachers toward habit sub-scale in terms of school type, education level and agevariables, statistically significant difference was found in terms of teaching experience. Whileno statistically significant difference was found among the views of the teachers towardfighting sub-scale in terms of gender, education level, teaching experience and age variables,statistically significant difference was found in terms of school type. No statisticallysignificant difference was found among the views of the teachers toward risk, education andresponsibility sub-scales in terms of school type, education level, age and teaching experiencevariables.
