The Tafsir Method of Mahmud Esʿad Coşan in the Context of Surah al-Fātiḥah and Surah al-Baqarah From the moment the revelation descended upon the Prophet Muḥammad (peace be upon him), the Qur'an has been interpreted through various exegetical methods and enriched with new perspectives in accordance with the social, cultural, and intellectual conditions of each era. In the contemporary period, efforts to understand and interpret the Qur'an continue within diverse methodological and interpretive frameworks. Mahmud Esʿad Coşan, one of the leading scholars and thinkers of the Turkish-Islamic world, is a contemporary religious scholar and opinion leader who made significant contributions in this field. Through his tafsir lectures—beginning with Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and continuing up to verse 223 of Sūrat al Baqarah—Coşan not only conveyed his scholarly knowledge but also reached wide audiences. A review of the existing literature reveals that no prior academic study in Turkish has been conducted specifically on this work. For this reason, the present research aims to introduce Mahmud Esʿad Coşan's Qur'anic discourses and examine his tafsir methodology. This study consists of an introduction, two main chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction presents the topic, purpose, methodology, and sources of the research. The first chapter explores Mahmud Esʿad Coşan's life, works, teachers, scholarly contributions, social activities, academic career at the university, and the sources he utilized in his exegesis. The second chapter examines his use of riwāyah (narrative-based) and dirāyah (rational analytical) methods and his approach to the verses from the perspective of ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān within the context of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah and verse 223 of Sūrat al-Baqarah. To facilitate a clearer understanding of these topics, a general framework of the relevant concepts is provided, followed by an analysis of Coşan's interpretations through examples from the verses. The conclusion section presents general evaluations regarding the research findings.
