The effect of spouse violence on suicide probability and treatment compliance in married women patients diagnosed with major depression

This descriptive study was conducted to determine the effect of spousal violence on suicide probability and treatment compliance in married female patients with major depression. The sample of the study consisted of 124 married female patients diagnosed with major depression who were hospitalized in the psychiatry clinic or applied to the psychiatry outpatient clinic for outpatient treatment at Kahramanmaraş Necip Fazıl City Hospital between January 16, 2023 and July 17, 2023. Personal Information Form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Spouse Violence Against Women Scale (SVAWS), Suicide Probability Scale (SPS), Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS) were used as data collection tools. The analysis of the data was carried out with SPSS statistical 22.0 version. It was determined that the average age of married female patients diagnosed with major depression participating in the study was 40.98±10.03 (between 19-62 years old), 32.26% of them graduated from primary school, 62.9% of them were housewives, 41.94% of them had hospitalization in the clinic, 37.1% of them had attempted suicide. The mean total scale scores of the patients diagnosed with major depression were as follows: BDI 31.45±10.59, SVAWS 76.73±24.5, SPS 77.53±18.89 and MMAS 2.35±1.39. It was determined that there was a statistically significant positive relationship between the mean total score of the BDI and the mean total scores of the CWBS and IOS, and a statistically significant negative relationship between the mean total score of the BDI and the mean total score of the ITS (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the mean total scores of the SVAWS and the SPS, and a statistically significant negative correlation between the mean total scores of the SVAWS and the MMAS (p<0.05). There was a statistically significant negative correlation between the mean total scores of the SPS and the MMAS (p<0.05). The results of the study revealed that in married female patients diagnosed with major depression, depression severity and suicide probability increased and treatment compliance decreased as spousal violence increased. It is recommended that psychiatric nurses plan interventions to decrease the severity of depression, spousal violence, suicide probability and increase treatment compliance.
