Examinatin of articles written about media literacy and social studies education and media literacy

The objective of this study is to examine the general trends of academic articles written about media literacy, social studies education and media literacy from 2007 to 2023 in Turkey. Herein, as a result of the field examination conducted in the Dergi Park database, 43 studies were found in the field of social studies education, and 198 studies were found in other main branches of science. The articles that had been found through document analysis were evaluated by using thematic content analysis method. The articles examined within the scope of the study were categorized under various subject headings numerical datas were visualized with graphics such as subject headings, years, research methods, sample groups, sample sizes, data analysis techniques, and other main branches of science. According to the results of the research, it was determined that the studies on media literacy have fluctuated over the years and have extended beyond social sciences through an interdisciplinary approach, however, a decline in recent years was observed in the number of such studies. The research was generally administrated by using quantitative data collection methods, and the use of qualitative and mixed methods were less common. The sample groups in the studies were mainly focused on teachers and students, with a wide variety observed in terms of sample sizes. It was determined that quantitative analysis, mixed analysis, and descriptive analysis were among the most commonly used methods, while thematic/content analysis and document analysis were the least preferred analysis methods. Compared to other disciplines, it has been observed that interdisciplinary studies and research on social studies education are in a relatively better position in terms of quantity.
