The poem of Faraiz by Mehmed Hashim Efendi (Analysis-translated text)

This study emerged as the result of examining the text and contents of work titled Poem of Faraiz by Mehmed Hashim Efendi. The work, written in poetic form, is about the science of Faraiz, which is one of the sub-branches of Islamic jurisprudence that deals with the rules set by Islam regarding inheritance. With this study that we named The Poem of Faraiz by Mehmed Hashim Efendi (Analysis – Translated Text), we aim to introduce a new work to the world of literature that will be added to the group of poetic works on Faraiz, one of the lesser-known genres written for instructive purposes in classical Turkish literature. The work titled Poem of Faraiz by Mehmed Hashim Efendi is registered in the Manuscripts section of the Presidency of Religious Affairs Library with the inventory number 5344-II. The work consists of 41 folios and contains 1214 couplets. It was authored by Seyyid Mehmed Hashim Efendi, who lived in the late 17th century and early 18th century, but little information is available about him in biographical sources. The work was written in 1708. In this didactic style and in the form of masnawi poetry, the science of Faraiz is extensively discussed. The work is based on el-FerâizusSiraciyye, a renowned and widely accepted work in the field of Islamic law, written by a Hanafi jurist, Muhammad as-Sajawandi. Our study consists of an introduction followed by two main sections. The introduction provides general information about calassical Turkish literature in preparation for the main topic. Also included are information about the science of Faraiz and its sources, together with an overview of Turkish Faraiz poems that have been identified until now, along with the process of their emergence. In the first section, the life and literary personality of Seyyid Mehmed Hashim Efendi is discussed based on the referenced sources. In the second section, the work is examined in terms of its characteristics and the content it addresses. In the continuation has the translated text of the work. In the last part, there is the original text of the work under the appendix title.
