Abstract (EN)

Sanitary landfilling method is a solid waste disposal method commonly utilized because of its being safe and economical. The important part of this system is to determine the storage site for waste. Mersin, a southern city with its population (709.848) and industrial potential is one of the most important urban areas in Turkey in which daily waste products are 650 tons. Existing depositional area in this city has completed its life and become a threatening factor for the environment. Additionally, the distance between settlement and waste dumping area has become closer carrying a risk for human and environmental health. Because of that reason, Mersin needs a new and healthier waste disposal area. The effective parameters for choosing a disposal site within this work have been evaluated by being proposed 4 alternative areas. For this reason, the most suitable storage site has been determined and started to a project and then resoluted that a pit operated by a cement factory be chosen for storage which is situated on the Handere Formation composed of CH, CL type fine grained soils. The formation partly impermeable is evaluated as one of the positive properties for waste storage.
