Examination of building facades in Mersin historical city center with a phenomenological approach

The aim of our thesis is It is the examination of registered historical building facades located in an area selected from the center, the oldest part of the city of Mersin, from a perceptual and semantic theoretical perspective, within the framework of a phenomenological approach. In order to understand architecture, first of all, its connection with the city, which has concrete and abstract unity, should be questioned. In this way, the originality arising from locality can become understandable. Then, how the building is in contact with its environment can be understood through its association with the street, which is the closest road. Revealing the thought, which is the first step in the formation of the structure, will be examined on a philosophical basis. In this regard, first, the relations between the concepts of city, street and philosophy and architecture are discussed separately, and the personal and opinions of various thinkers are discussed together. In the examination of interpretations about architecture, the works of writers whose thoughts are in the direction of the phenomenological approach were examined. In this way, stimulating information was obtained for the interpretations to be made. In order to make façade interpretations that will be created with a phenomenological approach, which is the aim of the thesis, respectively; The difference between perception and sensation, the place of the senses in the perception of space, and the concept of phenomenology are explained. In addition, the ideas and works of philosophers and architects who adopt the phenomenological approach regarding the unity of philosophy and architecture are reviewed and explained. As a result of all these researches, a general reading of the city of Mersin was made. Finally, the selected buildings, along with their locations and facade photographs, were interpreted with a phenomenological approach and turned into text in a single paragraph.
