Abstract (EN)

Metabolic syndrome (MeS) is an important cause of morbidity affecting millions of people all over the world in 21st century. In this study, the effects of resveratrol on apelin, resistin and Insulin resistance parameters were planned to be investigated on MeS generated male Sprague Dawley rats.In this study; 40 rats, 250 ± 20 grams in weight, were divided into 4 groups. The experimental groups were as follow: one control group was fed with basal diet; one MeS group was fed 8 weeks with basal diet supplemented with 10% fructose, one MeS group was fed with 10 mg/ kg/day resveratrol in addition to MeS group, one MeS group was fed with 10 mg/kg/day pioglitazone in addition to MeS group. The rats were decapitated and resistin, apelin and biochemical parameters were studied in blood samples.Serum resistin levels of MeS rats were increased compared with control group (95,83%; p<0,001) and were decreased by 35,09 % in resveratrol group and by 28,81%?in pioglitazone group (p<0,001). Apelin was detected in MeS group (30,91%; 2,07±0,46 ng/ml) and this increase in resveratrol group (56,60%; 2,60±0,46) was found more significant than pioglitazone group (% 48,31; 2,24±0,42 ng/ml) (p<0,01). A positive correlation between insulin and HOMA-IR was detected ( r = 0,783; p = 0,007 ) in MeS group and HOMA-IR ( p<0,001 ), insulin ( p<0,001) and HbA1c ( p<0,01 ) levels were decreased in resveratrol group. Histopathological examination of the aorta revealed decrease in perivascular lymphocytic infiltration in resveratrol group and mild increase in perivascular lymphocytic infiltration in pioglitazone group. Our studies show that resistin contributes to formation of insulin resistance, apelin plays an important role in the regulation of this resistance and they may act as central regulators in insulin resistance, besides resveratrol treatment has significant positive effects on serum apelin, resistin and lipid levels. Keywords: Metabolic Syndrome, Resveratrol, Resistin, Apelin
