A comparative approach to the education of Muslims and non-muslims of İzmir during the modernization process (1856-1908)

In this study, the education of Muslims, Non-Muslims and foreigners under the domination of the Otoman Empire has been clarified first. Then the education of the nations has been written down.The evolution of the nations? education and how this evolution has been formed are elucidated. Both in the empire and in İzmir, the educational position of the nations are stated in a comparative method.By this study, schools in İzmir -Evangelic School, Italian Girls? School, Soeurs de Charite School, Dame de Sion Boarding School, Mesropyan School- and the education of the Armenian, Jewish schools, American girls? and boys? schools and the education of the Greek have been revealed in such a detailed way for the first time. The reverse attitudes in the education of the Muslims, Non-Muslims and foreigners towards the Government?s politics have been brought to light.The contribution of Evangelic School to the foundation of Greece has been evaluated by means of comparing the education in primary schools and also comparing the education in secondary schools in İzmir. İzmir Mekteb-i İdadi and Mekteb-i Sanayi have been elucidated by historical and original documents.Furthermore, by this study, some errors about the history of education in İzmir and in the Otoman Empire have been rectified in accordance with the academic rules in the text.Key Words: Muslim, Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Foreigner, Education, Comparison, Modernization, İzmir.
